Can Engineered Hardwood Floors Be Refinished?
Some engineered hardwood floors can be refinished, but not every engineered product has enough real wood above the core to tolerate full sanding. The critical factor is the remaining wear layer, along with previous sanding and the condition of the floor.
What We Check First
- Approximate veneer or wear-layer thickness.
- Whether the floor has already been sanded before.
- Signs that the veneer is thin near edges, bevels, or damaged areas.
- Whether the problem is limited to the finish rather than the wood.
If there is not enough wood left for safe sanding, a compatible screen and recoat or another maintenance option may be more appropriate. Floors with active moisture problems, delamination, or structural failure need those issues addressed before cosmetic restoration.
