Hardwood Floor Cleaning vs. Polishing: What Does Your Floor Need?
Professional hardwood floor cleaning and polishing are not the same service. Cleaning focuses on removing suitable soil, residue, and traffic buildup from the existing surface. Polishing is a maintenance process intended to improve the appearance or sheen of a compatible finish after the floor has been evaluated and, when needed, properly cleaned.
Choose Cleaning When
- The floor has embedded soil, residue, or traffic buildup.
- Routine household cleaning is no longer producing an even appearance.
- The existing finish is still intact and does not require sanding.
Polishing May Be Appropriate When
- The finish is compatible with the selected maintenance product or method.
- The surface is dull but not worn through to bare wood.
- Residue and contamination have been addressed first.
Polish or wax should never be applied blindly to an unknown coating. Incompatible products can create buildup and future adhesion problems. If the finish is worn through or the wood is damaged, a recoat or full refinishing may be the more appropriate path.
