Water-Based vs. Oil-Based Floor Finish
Choosing between water-based and oil-based polyurethane is a key decision. Both offer excellent protection, but they have distinct differences.
Typical dry times vary by product and conditions.
Water-Based Polyurethane
- Appearance: Dries crystal clear and stays clear over time.
- Drying Time (Touch vs Full): Surface dry in 2-4 hours per coat; light traffic allowed after proper curing windows.
- Odor & VOCs: Low VOCs and minimal odor.
Oil-Based Polyurethane
- Appearance: Leaves a warm, amber glow that darkens slightly over time.
- Drying Time (Touch vs Full): Requires 12-24 hours between coats; full curing takes up to a week or more.
- Odor: Stronger odor requiring proper ventilation.
